Sophomore David Bauer advances to Championship round

Five golfers from the Hastings High School team participated in a Junior PGA qualifying round at Hidden Greens on Wednesday, June 19. Mason Leary, Drew Mamer, Brecken Fullerton, David Bauer and Jon Harris all participated in the qualifying rounds. There are two divisions for the JPGA, age 13-15 and 16-18. Bauer competed in the 13-15 group while the other four competed in the older bracket. The 13-15 group qualified the top six golfers and the 16-18 group qualified the top eight.
Bauer finished his round in sixth place with a +6, 78. Hidden Greens is a technically challenging course with a lot of trees and cleverly placed sand traps. Shooting six over par is a solid accomplishment for most golfers. Bauer did so with only five bogeys and one double bogey. He also had two Birdies and ten par scores. Bauer was the only Raider to move on to the championship round at North Oaks on July first and second.
When we caught up to Bauer on the seventh tee, he said he felt the day was going pretty well up to that point. He looked very relaxed and had a great tee shot to the green on the short par three hole.
Harris was the first golfer encountered on the course while he was warming up on the practice green. He also looked relaxed and ready to go as he took instructions from the onsite officials at the first tee. He ended up finishing tied for eleventh overall with a +6, 78, just two strokes out of qualifying finishing with one birdie, five bogeys, a double bogey and 12 pars.
Fullerton, Leary and Mamer all played at the Junior Varsity level for Hastings this year. Fullerton was able to chat before his first tee and he spoke on what he hoped to learn from the Jr. PGA qualifier.
“I hope to be a lot less nervous in the school tournaments and to be able to perform better there. Playing in these qualifiers will definitely help me because it’s a lot more important than just a regular tournament because I can actually qualify for something,” he said.
Fullerton finished just five strokes from qualifying with a +11, 83. Leary was just a few strokes behind him with an 86 and Mamer was listed as ‘did not finish’ (DNF). It was unknown as to the reason for the DNF.
