The Hastings Raiders Girls Tennis Team is making headway on the court despite losing the team events over the last few weeks. 2024 was expected to be a learning and growing year for the Raiders young players and that growth is happening. Longer volleys, taking individual matches to deeper points and winning a few more matches is all part of becoming better tennis players and these girls are working hard to do that, despite losing the team events.

What positives has Head Coach Marissa Welch seen carrying over from the previous week?
“Having more matches always helps with competition and figuring out what we do,” she said. “Yesterday was awesome to just finally have a proper practice. We get rolling with matches and then we don’t have time to fine tune stuff, so, yesterday was good for that.”
Where has Coach Welch noticed most of the improvements in the last few weeks?
“I would say, our doubles in general, they are working so hard at figuring out the game and figuring out the strategy, and they are. One, Two and Three are really working hard and they've made the most strides in improvements. They're just, they're so close. They are very close to just flipping that switch and being there,” Welch explained.
That being so close is noticeable in their single game scores and their body language, there is a confidence growing in them and it is neat to see the advancement.
The Raiders continue their busy schedule with a match on Sept. 12 at 4:00 p.m. at home against North St. Paul. Then an all-day affair starting at 9:00 a.m. at Northview Park in Eagan on Sept. 14. Sept. 17 at Tartan at 4:00 p.m. and at home on Sept. 19 against Mahtomedi, also at 4:00 p.m.
