John “Huns” Werth Jr., age 95, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Tuesday, October 8, 2024 in Prescott, Wisconsin.

Huns was born on November 4, 1928 in Hastings to John Sr. and Lavon Werth. He graduated from Hastings High School and soon after joined the National Guard. He married Helen Wildes on June 2, 1951 before being deployed to the war in Korea. After his return, he joined his father in the family grocery business, Werth Foods. In retirement, he worked part-time at one of the golf courses as the beverage cart driver where he enjoyed meeting all of the golfers.

John was very proud of being a veteran and being a member of both the American Legion and the VFW in Hastings. He was a member of the VFW’s Honor Guard for over 30 years and enjoyed the weekly get-togethers at the club office.

Huns loved talking to people and always found a friend no matter where he went. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Helen (Wildes) Werth; parents, John Sr. and Lavon Werth; sister-in-law, Sandie Werth.

John is survived by his children, Cindy (Steve) Mollick, Linda (Bill) Deitner, Mark (Melissa) Werth; grandchildren, Krista (Eric) Mace, Missy (Paul) Jungbauer, Jeff (Jessica) Deitner, Kate (Scott) LaRoque; great-grandchildren, Will Mace, Brooke Mace, Jaime Jungbauer, John Jungbauer, Jocelyn Deitner, Isabelle Deitner, Lucas LaRoque, Lainey LaRoque; brother, Jim Werth; many nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.

A Memorial Service was held 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 14, 2024, at Starkson Family Life Celebration Chapel in Hastings, with Gordon Gathright officiating. Military Honors will be provided by Hastings VFW Lyle Russell Post 1210 immediately following the service at the funeral home. Interment will be at Lakeside Cemetery in Hastings.

Friends and family are cordially invited to a visitation one hour prior to the service, and to a reception immediately following the service, all at the funeral home on Monday.
