Brock Bauer is team high gun at State Skeet Championship

The state skeet championship was held in Prior Lake and the league has added a 3rd day to get the 250 athletes representing 40 high schools through. Like our trap team the skeet team competes on the final day as one of the biggest teams in the state. The skeet team shot on June 27th. One of the greatest things about these sports is that all shooters are eligible to compete at state. Based on their five-competition week average they shoot at state against others in their same division of either novice, junior varsity or varsity and it is a clean slate allowing anyone to be the champion.

The skeet team had 19 shooters register for state division 3A (16 male/3 female) and placed 4th overall out of 7 teams with 447 points. Prior Lake took 1st place with 488 points, Wayzata 2nd place with 478 points and New Prague 3rd place with 450 points. Hastings did not have five or more shooters compete in the novice division so we did not qualify for any team novice awards. We had 8 varsity shooters, 8 junior varsity and 3 novice shooters.

Our team high gun male for the novice division was Brecken Johnson in 1st place (68 out of 100), junior varsity in 3rd place Nick Leifeld (84 out of 100) and varsity Brock Bauer in 11th place (94 out of 100). Our team high gun females for the novice division were Keela Butler in 3rd place (38 out of 100), junior varsity Kaitlyn Schutz in 1st place (87 out of 100) and no females shot in the varsity division. It should be noted that Kaitlyn Shutz was in 2nd place overall for male/female junior varsity and missed a tie for 1st place overall by one target.

Congratulations to the following who brought home individual championship medals: Kaitlyn Schutz 1st place JV, Brecken Johnson 1st place Novice, Keela Butler 3rd place Novice and Nick Leifeld 3rd place JV and to the Junior Varsity team for taking 1st place in the Junior Varsity division. We would also like to congratulate Brody Anderson, Brock Bauer and Isaac Nauer for shooting a straight 25 at the championship.

We will close out the season with 7 shooters competing at the National High School Clay Target League trap championship in Mason, Michigan July 10th – 14th.
