There will be no more beating on shower curtain poles! The broom had been retired! Martha Mary Sofio of Hastings passed away on July 19, 2024. The cause of her death was trying to live too long. Born July 14, 1938, she grew up in Bayonne and Westfield NJ. She married and in 1960 moved with her new husband, Frank, to Hastings where they resided at 1615 Walnut Street. There they had 4 children: Pancake, Mia, Thing 1 and Thing 2. Realizing that there house was too small they moved to (I can’t say the address because our society is too full of nuts who think that crime is a job…and that they have been screwed over and are owed…and that somehow makes them different than anyone else) where they raised their family, a dog, a couple of ferrets, and many field mice.

Martha’s working career went from Nurse to Administrator of the OB/Gyn floor in a big ole urban hospital somewhere in Minneapolis to becoming a Professor. She believed that Medicine/Medical care needed to change their perspective from seeing people as diseases and physical maladies to seeing them as PEOPLE with diseases and physical maladies. In her journey she picked up a several other certificates pertaining to nursing…it was hard to keep track. Her final position was that of professor of nursing where she tried to instill the importance of humanity into her students.

She was a kind and loving mother, when she was with her children, who were raised feral, prompting them to develop survival skills on their own such as how to use a mixing bowl to make Malt-O-Meal, scrape the burnt off of toast, and make chocolate chip cookies out of cake mix. She was a loving and wise Grandmother to her eight Grandchildren…Anna, Catelyn, Addie, Dominic, Tina, Mea, Nick, and Martha. All whom she adored and loved to be around…unlike her own children. She was a loving and caring Great Grandmother of Bennett, Ava, and Leigha.

Martha and Frank were a perfectly matched couple, each complimenting the other. In their marriage of 62 years they had countless friends and touched many many lives with their kindness and generosity. They both loved Hastings and never saw any reason to leave…except on vacations without their children.

Martha leaves behind her siblings Charles, George, Francis, Marie, Christine, Rita, and Barbara. She will also be missed by her beloved in-laws Sharon, Gar, Jack, Bill, Margaret, Laura, Kelly, Jana, Chris, and Justin.

Martha lived a full life. The last two years without Frank were difficult but now we hope they are together again in their next great adventure.
